Giving

One way we encourage people to fully participate in the life of the church is by offering our time and talent. We believe that stewardship of our finances is an important part in our journey of faith. Here are some ways you can contribute to Southminster besides bringing your donations to the church.

Per Capita

As Presbyterians, we can be proud of the many things that the greater church does. Some examples include: supporting new church growth, providing resources for congregations, sponsoring camping programs for children and adults, and training persons to become Ministers of the Word. The local presbytery also coordinates group purchases of insurance, employee benefits, and other services that reduce our costs and save us time.

As a member of the national Presbyterian Church USA (PCUSA), Southminster pays per capita dues for each member on the rolls of our church to support the administrative, legislative, and judicial functions of the Presbytery, Synod, and General Assembly.

The per capita payment for 2023 is $46.50 for each member of the church.

Session has a budget expectation that each member will consider making a Per Capita gift this year in the amount of $46.50 for each member of Southminster in your family. Your support to pay the Per Capita amount, as in prior years, allows us to more fully use your other pledges and gifts for our congregation’s efforts.

Special Offering

We participate in four special offerings each year. One Great Hour of Sharing, Pentecost Offering, Peace & Global Witness Offering, and Christmas Joy Offering each play an important role in defining what it means to be a connectional church.

One Great Hour of Sharing

A gift to One Great Hour of Sharing enables the church to share God’s love with our neighbors-in-need around the world by providing relief to those affected by natural disasters, providing food to the hungry, and helping to empower the poor and oppressed.

Pentecost

A gift to the Pentecost Offering helps the church encourage, develop, and support its young people, and also addresses the needs of at-risk children.

Peace & Global Witness

A gift to the Peace & Global Witness Offering enables the church to promote the Peace of Christ by addressing systems of injustice across the world. The Presbyterian Mission Agency advocates for peace and justice in cultures of violence, including our own, through collaborative projects of education and Christian witness.

Christmas Joy

Each year during the Advent and Christmas season, we turn our eyes to Bethlehem and celebrate the wondrous gift of Jesus Christ, our Savior. By giving to the Christmas Joy Offering, you honor this gift by providing assistance to current and retired church workers in their time of need and developing our future leaders at Presbyterian-related schools and colleges equipping communities of color.

IRA Qualified Charitable Distributions

At age 72, a distribution from your IRA to the church qualifies towards your required minimum distribution. The church is eligible to receive IRA qualified charitable distributions (QCD). Not all charities qualify for QCDs, and the Southminster Foundation does not qualify because it is a “supporting organization,” i.e. a charity carrying out exempt purposes by supporting other exempt organizations. The Foundation provides support with grants to community non-profits and to Southminster Church.

When working with your financial advisor, please ensure they understand the Foundation is separate from Southminster Church, so they use the proper designation on the QCD form.

The Foundation is a tax exempt 501(c)(3) organization so regular tax-deductible donations (outside an RMD) are encouraged.

Legacy Gifts

Your gifts, both now and after your lifetime can make your church home stronger and more responsive to the needs of generations to come. And a memorial gift or bequest enables the Southminster community to remember you or someone you love. Click here to learn more.

Thank you for supporting Southminster, where all are welcome.
