For many people, evolution is a difficult scientific theory to accept. It might not be intuitive that species have changed through time. Indeed, repeated polls over the last several decades have shown that nearly half of all Americans do not accept the idea of evolution. Most of us accept that smaller changes in species have occurred – this is called microevolution. But large scale changes, called macroevolution, are more difficult to understand. Whale evolution illustrates why this latest understanding of biology and geology rests on what may be our greatest discovery about life on Earth.

Come hear Dr. Jon Peters give us a detailed look at the evidences for whale evolution, perhaps one of the most difficult evolutionary transitions proposed and then shown to be true. What are the various lines of evidence, from fossils, modern whale anatomy, and DNA analysis, which now demonstrate the evolution of modern whales from a deer-like land animal millions of years ago? By looking closely at this one aspect of evolution we can see how the work of hundreds of scientists over decades has unraveled an amazing story within Earth’s past: about one group of very special mammals that migrated from water to land and back into the water – the whales.

DR. JON PETERS holds a BS in Zoology from Arizona State University, an MS in Biology from Northern Arizona University, and an MD from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, Dallas. His interest in the evolution/creation controversy began in 1971 when he read Whitcomb and Morris’ The Genesis Flood while pursuing his undergraduate studies. Recently, he renewed his interest in the origins controversy when it became apparent that newer DNA discoveries might hold the key to resolving much of the debate regarding evolution.
